Ryan pulled Lucy into his arms as they stood in front of the luggage carousel at the airport in Portland, Oregon. “We’re almost there,” he said and brushed her unruly curls away from her upturned face. He touched his lips gently to hers. He and Lucy had been best friends ever since she’d moved to Polson, Montana as a ten year old, some eighteen years ago. She’d been traumatized by the death of her parents and he’d given her the kind of unquestioning support only another child can.
